Jo Cook starts as TJ’s new Editor and tells us her plans

It’s a joy to be back at Training Journal, and an honour to be it’s new Editor to head into 2024 and beyond. Some of you may remember that I was Deputy Editor 2015-2019, and I never really let go! I did some podcasts and webinars and wrote some articles, but now I’m more focused on supporting workplace learning than ever.

It very much feels like a long-term dream has come true

I’ve worked in the learning and development industry for over 25 years and before that as a freelance magazine journalist, amongst a few other things, so it very much feels like a long-term dream has come true to be the Editor of a journal that focuses on helping people to help people, a very ingrained value of mine.

Another milestone is how long Debbie Carter has worked on several roles at TJ: the best part of 20 years, and I’ve had the pleasure of being friends with her for well over a decade of that. My one sadness in taking on this role is that I won’t be working with Debbie this time round, though her legacy and vision are imbued within the digital DNA of Training Journal and I shall do my best to continue the amazing leadership she has shown in our industry.

What does the future hold for TJ? What I want is to ensure that TJ is here to celebrate it’s 60th birthday in 2025 and that it serves the many and varied roles in the people profession. Of course there will be coverage of AI and technology, practical L&D topics and some things to get us thinking too. This work is a flexible role that allows me to continue to serve clients through my own business and I’ll be bringing those skills to TJ, with an eye to video, podcasts and webinars in the future to help with our own learning and development.

More than anything, I want to enjoy, support and improve our industry, and I hope to do that with you alongside.
